From Jerusalem I took a bus to Bethlehem, which is located in the West Bank. (West Bank topic will get its own post...) After gaining entry, I had a lovely cab driver who spoke English (and Russian and Arabic and Hebrew) so he pointed out things along the drive. He let me off in Manger Square at the Church of the Nativity.
I went inside and got to see where Jesus was born! (Well, the church was built on top of the site where he was born.) There's a passage directly underneath the altar where you walk down some steps and come to a fireplace-looking-thing with a marker saying that's the spot. The mood was much lighter than at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (makes sense...birth vs death) and an Italian tour group broke out into song while we were down there.
